The origins of the Cunard Line were started by a Nova Scotian merchant and shipowner Samuel Cunard (1787–1865), who together with George Napier, David MacIver and George Burns were awarded the Atlantic mail contact by the Admiralty on May 4th, 1939.

They founded the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which evolved into the Cunard Line in 1950.
